Featuring a large scale black and white recreation of a classic movie scene.
Building on The Pizzuti Companies commitment to Living with Art, Phase III of Library Park located at the corner of 50 South Grant and Oak Street will reinterpret a classic movie scene featuring a 360-degree viewable art installation.
The artwork for 50 South Grant was inspired by a stunning black-and-white image depicting silent film stars Greta Garbo and John Gilbert in a scene from their 1926 movie “Flesh and the Devil,” which captures the amazing chemistry of one of early Hollywood’s most famous couples.
The installation at the corner of Grant and Oak is a more recent interpretation of the scene by local artist Jason Cho and others, completed in 1997. While Cho’s wall mural remains, views of it are limited. The new installation reinterprets the image in a new medium, using a technique of perforated metal panels which brings the black and white image to life, creating an exciting new display of artwork on a highly visible corner of the neighborhood.
The making of the artwork takes the historical image and then translates it to a laser-cut pattern in an array of aluminum panels. This technique brings the picture to life both day and night, illuminated by the sun during the day and the building light by night. The installation is supported by steel columns and the supporting framework will be painted with a white finish. The perforations in the panels will then appear as black voids, resulting in a generously sized black and white recreation of the classic movie scene.
The picture-perforated assembly provides desirable privacy for residents and guests within the lobby, and a stunning visual for the pedestrians walking the streets of the Discovery District, resulting in 360-degrees of viewable art.
Additional installations and curated pieces have been thoughtfully selected and displayed throughout each phase of Library Park, immersing residents in the culture of the neighborhood. The Alice in Wonderland series by artist Kirk Mangus can be viewed on the south side of 409 Oak Street.
